There is no let up on the GAA front as winter creeps in with the A finals in the minor and u21 championships down for decision this weekend. Sports clubs unite in white collar event

Three sporting clubs in the Foxford area have joined forces to stage a fantastic night of white collar boxing. Knockmore /Foxford boxing club, Moy Davitts (GAA), and Straide and Foxford United (soccer) will put on an exhibition of boxing that is certain to entertain the large attendance expected as ticket sales are soaring at present. Final four pairings decided in senior championship

Knockmore manager Nigel Reape may have a future in fortune telling after the way the names came out of the hat in the semi-final draw for the Mayo GAA Treanlaur Catering Senior Football Championship on Sunday evening. Asked only a few minutes after the full time whistle of his sides win over Ballintubber who would he like to get, he signaled out Castlebar Mitchels as the side he wanted in the semi-finals and a couple of minutes later when the draw was completed he got his wish. Knockmore and the Mitchels will go toe to toe next Sunday in Elverys MacHale Park at a time to be confirmed at the time of writing in one of the senior semi-finals. The other last four pairing is the meeting of Breaffy and Charlestown who will square off on Sunday in the same venue, with the time and referee appointment to be determined shortly. The meeting of Cill Chomain and Ardnaree in the final of the Mayo GAA junior football championship had been penciled in for next Sunday at 2pm in MacHale Park according to the Mayo GAA website on Sunday evening, with the official county board twitter account also confirming that the senior semi-finals will be in the same venue on the same day, so a triple header of football looks in store next Sunday in Castlebar.

Historic big two meet in last eight showdown

The draw for the quarter-finals of the Treanlaur Catering Senior Football Championships have pitted the historic big two of the game in the county against each other for a place in the semi-final. Pat Holmes’ Castlebar Mitchels’ reward for topping their group including Breaffy, Crossmolina, and Davitts is a meeting with John Healy’s Ballina Stephenites, whenever the games get around to being played. Both sides are far and away the top dogs in the role of honour in the championship with Ballina Stephenites having claimed the title on 36 previous occasions and Castlebar Mitchels winning 27 titles.

Final eight sides emerge in senior and intermediate championships

The final round of group games in both the Treanlaur Catering Senior Football Championship and the Egan Jewellers Intermediate Football Championships took place last weekend. In the senior championship, the defending county champions Ballaghaderreen were held to their second draw so far this year in the championship, when Ballinrobe engaged them in a 0-20 to 2-14 shootout — alas for the south Mayo men it was not enough for them as Garrymore’s win over Aghamore saw them through with Ballagh’ into the last eight.
